How Important is Oral Hygiene to Overall Health

Most importantly, you must be willing to take the steps necessary to eliminate dental disease and then prevent it from returning. It is critical that you understand that while someone else can perform needed treatment, no one else can prevent any disease for you. Prevention is something that is done by you, and not to you! You must also remember that no amount of treatment, no matter how necessary or successful, has ever prevented any disease. But if you are willing to do your part, you can eliminate dental disease from your life, forever. In doing so, you will have removed a serious impediment to achieving optimal health and extending the length and quality of your life.

If health is your goal, you will need to take the following steps.

  1. You must make an appointment with your dentist to determine the condition of your gums and be examined for any other disease or symptom that can show up in the oral cavity.
  2. You must tell your dentist, or hygienist, that you want a detailed examination of your gums and your want a periodontal pocket evaluation.
  3. You should request a copy of this chart, as it will be a valuable guide in your establishing a successful hygiene program.

You will also want to ask if you:

Are free of gum disease;

Have minor gum disease;

Have moderate gum disease; or

Have severe gum disease.

What is the Value of a Complete Oral Examination

A complete oral evaluation will be especially important if you:

Have any symptoms of gum disease;

Have heart disease, diabetes, respiratory disease, digestive problems, osteoporosis;

Are pregnant or planning a pregnancy; and

Have a sore or irritation in your mouth that does not heal within two weeks.

This examination will help determine the severity of your gum disease, the extent that it’s affecting your overall health, the type of treatment needed, and how seriously you should take this condition.

So if you want to become part of the solution, everything you need to know about your role and responsibility in treating and preventing gum disease, including how to successfully enlist the support of the dental hygienist, will be found in my book, Healthy Teeth - Healthy Body. In order to take full advantage of the information in the book, I’ve provided a Program Guide. This step-by-step guide will allow you to get the most out of the book and your dental team is explained in the Prevention Program.
